| Electric Bikes Electrically-assisted cycles are usually classified as either pedelecs (power only available when you pedal) or e-bikes (power independent of pedals - usually a twistgrip throttle). Under European Union regulations, adopted in Italy in January 2003, only power-assisted cycles meeting the pedelec classification are considered to be pedal cycles; the maximum power allowed in the European Union for (pedelec) electric bicycles is 250W, with a maximum assisted speed of 25km/h. This is EU definition for "pedelec" style electric-assist bicycle. To meet the pedelec specification the electric motor must be activated by the rider's pedalling effort and the power must cut out completely whenever the rider stops pedalling. A good electric bike flattens hills, increasing your average speed and eliminating any muscular stress. The speed provided by your electric bike will help you tackling more safely steep and busy roads.As running costs of an electric bike should be compared with those of a scooter or a car, it can help you saving a great deal of money. Moreover, using daily an electric bike will help you keeping fitter (and without undesired perspiration!).Energy consumed by an electric bike is really little: think of a 100 watt electric light bulb burning for an evening: the same energy will be enough to propel an electrically-assisted bike for more than 35 km.!
